Spurs Edge Past Amateur Team While United Shocks Arsenal in Intense FA Cup Matches

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur required extra time to secure a 3-0 victory against non-league Tamworth in their FA Cup match on Monday morning (AEDT).

Currently positioned 12th in the Premier League, Tottenham is 96 places above Tamworth, who are placed 16th in the fifth-tier National League.

The anticipated gap in quality was not evident, as Tottenham's performance nearly led to an embarrassing defeat against their part-time opponents, who juggle day jobs alongside their football careers. Tamworth challenged their higher-paid rivals for much of the match on the Lamb Ground’s artificial pitch.

Despite their efforts, Tamworth could not capitalize on several key chances that could have resulted in a historic FA Cup upset. Tottenham took control in extra time following Nathan Tshikuna’s own goal, and late goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson secured their passage into the fourth round.

Although Tottenham has not won a major trophy since 2008, manager Ange Postecoglou claims he historically achieves silverware in his second season with clubs.

In other FA Cup third-round action, ten-man Manchester United advanced past Arsenal, defeating them 5-3 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw.

Manchester United, who previously lost to Arsenal 2-0 in the Premier League in December, opened the scoring with a goal from Bruno Fernandes in the 52nd minute. United’s Diogo Dalot was sent off shortly after, but Arsenal was unable to take full advantage, missing a penalty opportunity saved by United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

Josh Zirkzee converted the decisive penalty for United after Arsenal's Kai Havertz was denied. United manager Ruben Amorim expressed pride in his team's resilience, stating that they deserved to progress.

Following this defeat, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta lamented his team's failure to capitalize on scoring opportunities, noting the significance of the result amidst their recent struggles.

The draw for the FA Cup fourth round features several notable matchups, including Manchester United facing Leicester, and Tottenham traveling to Aston Villa. Matches are set to take place from February 7-10.
