The Borussia Mönchengladbach management and players have expressed their disappointment regarding the recent penalty awarded to Bayern München during a match held at Borussia-Park on Saturday.
The penalty, converted by Harry Kane, ultimately decided the game in favor of Bayern, resulting in a 0-1 loss for Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Referee Felix Zwayer awarded the penalty in the second half after Michael Olise fell in the box following a challenge from Lukas Ullrich. However, Roland Virkus, managing director of sports for Gladbach, stated that the contact was insufficient to justify the call.
"It's really a shame. For me, it's a 50-50 story," Virkus commented post-match, noting that his critique was unrelated to the game's outcome and acknowledging Bayern's deserved victory.
Virkus highlighted that Olise "accepted it gratefully" and that the contact did not warrant a foul, suggesting that without the referee's whistle, VAR intervention would not occur. He further expressed disappointment with the overall refereeing performance.
Striker Tim Kleindienst also shared his perspective, labeling the penalty as soft. In remarks to Sky Germany, Kleindienst remarked, "If you call that a penalty, then there are 24 in every game. After all, it's a contact sport."
Kleindienst experienced a similar situation later in the match when he fell after a challenge by Kim Min-jae. He indicated that it would have been acceptable if no foul had been called in either instance.
