Freiburg Reach Europa League Semi-Finals After Beating Celta Vigo

Freiburg advanced to their first European semi-final after a 6-1 aggregate victory over Celta Vigo, progressing to the Europa League semi-finals where they will await the winner of Braga versus Real Betis.

The second leg opened with a quiet 30 minutes as Freiburg protected their comfortable lead from the first leg last week.

They seized control in the next 10 minutes, with Igor Matanović scoring from outside the box after a VAR check cleared a potential offside in the buildup.

A long ball to Jordy Makengo started the move for the first goal, and Philipp Lienhart winning the ball high up the pitch helped create the second.

Yuito Suzuki then doubled Freiburg’s advantage after a swift one-two with Jan-Niklas Beste, with a slight deflection by Marcos Alonso making it harder for IonuÈ› Radu to save.

Early in the second half, Freiburg extended their lead again as Suzuki made it 6-0 on aggregate after four half-time substitutions by the visitors’ coach settled in the game.

Sergio Carreira denied Johan Manzambi on the goal line after a superb run down the right, but Vincenzo Grifo set up Suzuki’s simple finish from the follow-up.

Noah Atubolu produced a few decent saves, but he was beaten by an injury-time strike from Williot Swedberg as Freiburg closed out the win.

The result provides Freiburg with a significant position in Germany’s bid for European qualification, and they will face Stuttgart in the domestic cup semi-final after a home league match against Heidenheim.
