Werder Bremen Secure Nordderby Victory Thanks to Stage's Brace

Jens Stage scored twice as Werder Bremen defeated HSV 3-1 in a feisty Nordderby, marking the club’s first Bundesliga win in the fixture since February 2018 and securing the three points with a late addition from Cameron Puertas.

The match featured a red card for Philip Otele after a VAR review and a potential red for Bakery Jatta earlier in the game that was overturned to a yellow following review. HSV’s only goal came from Robert Glatzel.

HSV created early chances, with Glatzel narrowly missing from a fifth-minute header, and Justin Njinmah forcing a save from the HSV goalkeeper in the seventh minute. A Puertas shot was saved a minute later, while an early Glatzel goal was disallowed after an offside call on Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer.

Königsdörffer continued to threaten Werder, but Werder opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Yukinari Sugawara’s cross found Stage for a header at the far post.

HSV equalised soon after, as Glatzel sprinted through and finished into the top corner after a sequence involving a failed foul decision, leaving the halftime score at 1-1.

Stage struck again in the 57th minute, curling a shot from outside the box into the top right corner after a Puertas ball, restoring Werder’s lead. A dramatic moment followed in the 79th minute when Otele was sent off after a foul on Puertas, with Jatta's later red card overturned to a yellow on VAR review.

Puertas effectively sealed the result in the first of twelve minutes of added time, recovering a loose pass, then Romaldo Schmid backheeled to Puertas who finished past the keeper to make it 3-1. A sideline scuffle involving staff from both clubs led to further dismissals in the aftermath.

Werder Bremen moved to 14th in the standings, five points clear of St. Pauli, while HSV sat 13th on goal difference. Werder’s next fixture is at VfB Stuttgart, and HSV host Hoffenheim next weekend.
