Spurs’ Relegation Troubles Worsen as New Manager Faces Tough Start; City Intensifies Title Bid – Premier League Wrap

Tottenham’s Premier League situation worsened after a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland in Roberto De Zerbi’s first match in charge, while Manchester City defeated Chelsea to narrow the gap to Arsenal at the top of the table.

Tottenham, under their third manager of the season, remain in the relegation zone and have not won a league game since December, raising the prospect of their first relegation from the top flight since 1977.

North of the city, Manchester City secured a 3-0 victory at Chelsea, moving six points behind Arsenal with a game in hand and keeping pressure on the leaders in the title race. City pressed for a decisive second half after a tight first half, with goals from Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi, and Jeremy Doku sealing the win.

At Sunderland, the hosts took the lead on the hour through a deflected shot from Nordi Mukiele off Micky van de Ven, a moment that proved decisive as Tottenham pushed for an equaliser but failed to respond.

De Zerbi described his squad as suffering from a crisis of confidence, suggesting a win could transform the team’s fortunes. He said the players could improve once confidence levels rise, adding that his role could be more about supporting the players than coaching football at this stage.

Tottenham’s fate remains precarious as they sit two points above the relegation zone with six games left. They are also listed among the wealthiest clubs globally, highlighting the unusual nature of their struggles this season.
