Premier League Referee Responsible for Controversial Klopp Outburst Dismissed

Premier League official David Coote was dismissed on Monday after referee chiefs deemed his position “untenable” following the emergence of a video containing derogatory remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Coote, 42, had been suspended last month after the video surfaced on social media, in which he referred to Klopp as “arrogant” and used offensive language.

In a statement, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) confirmed, “Following the conclusion of a thorough investigation into David Coote’s conduct, his employment with PGMOL has been terminated today with immediate effect.”

The statement further noted, “David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable. Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare.”

The video reportedly referenced a match officiated by Coote between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which ended in a 1-1 draw. After the match, Klopp criticized Coote, claiming the referee was too lenient regarding Burnley’s challenges.

Coote is also facing UEFA disciplinary proceedings following another video that allegedly shows him snorting a white powder during Euro 2024. Additionally, the Football Association is investigating claims that Coote discussed betting on issuing a yellow card with a fan before a match in England’s second-tier Championship.

Coote's last Premier League officiating assignment was during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory against Aston Villa on November 9.
