West Ham forward Michail Antonio is in a stable condition in hospital, being described as “conscious and communicating” following a road traffic accident, according to a statement from the Premier League club released on Sunday.
The 34-year-old Antonio is currently under “close supervision at a central London hospital,” as confirmed by West Ham.
The update comes after unverified images of a severely damaged Ferrari began to circulate online. West Ham's official statement noted, “Michail Antonio is in a stable condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon in the Essex area. Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision.”
The club requested respect for Antonio and his family's privacy during this difficult time, indicating that no further comments would be made that evening, although an update would be provided in due course.
Earlier, West Ham released a statement confirming that an accident had occurred, and Essex Fire Service reported attending the scene, where they assisted in releasing a man trapped in a vehicle.
Numerous Premier League clubs have expressed their support for Antonio, with Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool sharing well wishes on social media.
Antonio, a London-born Jamaica international, joined West Ham in 2015, during which he has scored 83 goals in 323 appearances. This season, he has netted once in 15 games, contributing to a 4-1 win against Ipswich in early October.
Additionally, he was part of the West Ham team that won the Europa Conference League in 2023 under the management of David Moyes. The club, now led by Julen Lopetegui, is scheduled to host Wolves on Monday.
