Preview of Mainz vs. Bayern Munich: Team Updates and Expected Lineups

On Wednesday night, Bayern Munich will face Mainz in the second round of the DFB-Pokal following a decisive 5-0 victory over Bochum.

Last season, Bayern experienced an unexpected exit from the tournament at this stage, losing to 3. Liga team Saarbrücken.

This year, under new coach Vincent Kompany, Bayern aims for a more successful cup run. Sporting director Christoph Freund emphasized the team's determination, stating, “Last year was disappointing. Our goal is to win tomorrow, to get to Berlin. Anything can happen in the cup. We need to be ready for that tomorrow. We want to progress.”

Mainz, meanwhile, has secured two Bundesliga victories this season, both away from home. In their most recent match, they took an early lead against Gladbach but ended in a draw after Tim Kleindienst equalized.

However, Mainz faces significant challenges as star striker Jonathan Burkardt will miss the match due to injury, along with defender Andreas Hanche-Olsen. Midfielder Nadiem Amiri is also a major doubt after sustaining a knock.

Bayern Munich reports no new injury concerns, with long-term absentees Sacha Boey, Hiroki Ito, Aleksandar Pavlovic, and Josip Stanisic still sidelined.

Predicted lineups for the Mainz vs. Bayern match are available for review.
