Nagelsmann unlikely to modify Undav role as World Cup duties take precedence over March assignments

A VfB Stuttgart striker, Deniz Undav, remains unlikely to secure a starting place for Germany at the 2026 World Cup despite scoring as a substitute in a 2-1 win over Ghana. The national team head coach indicated that starting roles are already assigned for the World Cup and Undav is viewed as a substitute option.

After scoring in the 88th minute, Undav suggested that continued goals could influence his role, but the coach stated it is unlikely a March performance will alter the World Cup plans. The coach emphasized that World Cup assignments are the priority over current March fixtures and that Undav would need to sustain substantial playing time to impact his role.

The coach noted that Undav did not involve himself much early in the game but took his chance when opportunities arose, highlighting the importance of goalscoring ability and the demand to convert chances when opponents are tiring. The remarks imply that Undav faces long odds to move into a starting position ahead of the World Cup.

In a post-match interview, Undav expressed appreciation for the fans’ support during the match and stood up for teammate Leroy Sané, underscoring a message of unity and collective support within the squad.
