Wolfsburg is reportedly close to appointing Dieter Hecking for a second spell as head coach, as the club seeks to avoid relegation after eight winless matches and a 17th-place standing. They trail 15th-place team FC St. Pauli by three points.
The move follows the departure of head coach Daniel Bauer earlier in the day, with the team aiming to stabilize the situation while survival remains possible.
Reports indicate Hecking could return nearly a decade after his previous tenure, which included a DFB-Pokal title, and would be charged with steering Wolfsburg away from danger and away from Bundesliga relegation for the first time in club history.
Hecking’s most recent job was with VfL Bochum in the 2. Bundesliga, where he was dismissed earlier this season after five matches with one win.
If appointed, his first match could be an away fixture against TSG Hoffenheim, presenting a challenging start to his mission to secure the club’s top-flight status.
