The Bundesliga season for 2025/26 is now well underway, with the fifth matchday recently completed. While many clubs are establishing their form, Werder Bremen has struggled to find their footing in the early part of the season.
Werder Bremen faced a particularly challenging start, beginning with an away match against Eintracht Frankfurt, who finished third in the previous season. The team suffered a 4-1 defeat, followed by a draw against Bayer Leverkusen. A brief respite came with a convincing 4-0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach before they faced another tough opponent, Freiburg, losing 3-0. Their schedule culminated in a heavy 4-0 loss to Bayern Munich, leaving them with only four points from their first five matches against primarily stronger teams.
This difficult start is further complicated by significant changes within the team, particularly in coaching. Ole Werner was replaced by Horst Steffen, who has introduced a different tactical approach that the players are still adjusting to. The transition has been challenging, especially as several new players have joined the squad, including academy graduate Mio Backhaus and new signings such as Samuel Mbangula, Cameron Puertas, and Victor Boniface.
Looking ahead, Bremen’s schedule is set to become less daunting. They will face St. Pauli, who have recently dropped form, followed by a match against Heidenheim, currently in the relegation zone. Their subsequent opponents, Union Berlin, Mainz, and Wolfsburg, are teams Bremen has historically been able to defeat.
While it may be unrealistic to expect a perfect record in these upcoming matches, there is optimism that Bremen can begin to gain momentum. The coming weeks will be crucial for the team's development and position in the league, as they work to improve and aim for a return to their previous competitive standing.
