Matthäus Emphasizes Importance of Gladbach's On-Field Identity

Borussia Mönchengladbach is currently facing significant challenges, sitting at the bottom of the Bundesliga table while dealing with the recent resignation of managing director Roland Virkus and the absence of a permanent head coach.

Lothar Matthäus, a former player for Gladbach, has emphasized the need for decisive action and has expressed appreciation for Virkus's decision to step down. He stated, "Gladbach needs to make a decision now, and quickly, but above all, the decision must be a good one. Roland Virkus's resignation is very consistent. He assessed the situation correctly."

Matthäus further remarked on Virkus's commitment to the club, saying, "It shows that he has a Gladbach heart. He can't solve the current problems and send the right signals that Gladbach needs; this is the right decision for him."

Regarding the coaching situation, Gerardo Seoane's departure has led to Eugen Polanski taking over as interim manager. Matthäus believes that it is premature to judge Polanski's performance, stating, "It's far too early to evaluate Eugen Polanski's work. I think he'll still be in charge of the next game, and then we have the international break, which we should obviously make use of."

He mentioned Roger Schmidt as a potential candidate for the head coach position but noted the importance of aligning the club's future direction with the playing style. Matthäus concluded, "Borussia also needs to consider what it wants to stand for on the field. What kind of football do they want to play? What style do they have the right players for, and who should bear sporting responsibility on and off the pitch?"
