Germany commenced their 2027 U21 European Championship qualifying campaign with a commanding 5-0 victory over Latvia at the Ostseestadion in Rostock.
Under the guidance of coach Antonio Di Salvo, the team displayed a sharp and purposeful approach from the outset, contrasting with their previous match in Albania. Germany created their first opportunity within two minutes, as Aljoscha Kemlein set up Nicolo Tresoldi for a one-on-one chance, which was thwarted by Latvian goalkeeper Ņikita Parfjonovs.
Despite a brief scare from a miscleared ball that allowed Kristiān Mežsargs a chance, Germany maintained control throughout the match. Their aggressive pressing stifled Latvia, who struggled to advance past the halfway line.
The breakthrough came in the 19th minute when Nelson Weiper's initial shot was saved, but Germany quickly regained possession. A combination of Brajan Gruda and Noël Aséko Nkili created space for Weiper, who scored with a low strike into the bottom corner, making it 1-0.
Latvia's situation worsened as the first half progressed. The German midfield trio of Kemlein, Aséko Nkili, and Muhammed Damar dominated play, while Gruda orchestrated the attack. Just before halftime, Gruda won the ball high up the pitch and assisted Tresoldi, who scored to double the lead to 2-0.
The second half began with Latvia needing a significant turnaround, but Germany quickly extinguished any hope. Within five minutes, Kemlein regained possession and set up Tresoldi, who scored his second goal, extending the lead to 3-0.
By the 56th minute, Tresoldi completed his hat-trick following a corner, and just two minutes later, Damar added a fifth goal with a precise shot from the edge of the box, bringing the score to 5-0. Germany's attacking prowess left Latvia struggling to respond.
Although a series of substitutions slowed Germany's momentum, they continued to dominate the match until the final whistle, securing a decisive 5-0 victory. This performance is expected to bolster the team's confidence as they prepare for a crucial match against Greece U21s next month in Jena.
