Ange Postecoglou remains under pressure following a poor run of results, but his position as head coach of Tottenham Hotspur is currently secure, according to Premier League insider David Ornstein. Ornstein stated on NBC Sports that Postecoglou is “100 percent safe in his job,” despite the mounting pressure reflected in his public comments.
Ornstein emphasized that the club is backing Postecoglou to lead their project forward, with hopes of securing a League Cup and a Europa League trophy while also aiming for a top-four finish in the league.
The spotlight on Postecoglou intensified after Tottenham's 2-1 loss to Newcastle, marking his second season in charge. Historically, Postecoglou has found greater success in his second seasons at previous clubs, winning titles with South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar, and Yokohama F Marinos.
However, his tenure at Tottenham has been inconsistent, with the team experiencing significant highs, such as victories over Manchester City and Aston Villa, contrasted by disappointing losses to Ipswich and Crystal Palace. Injuries have compounded these challenges, with defender Destiny Udogie joining a lengthy injury list prior to the Newcastle match.
The defense has been particularly affected, with first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and defenders Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, and Ben Davies all sidelined. In response to these issues, Postecoglou has expressed intentions to strengthen the squad during the January transfer window.
In a recent development, Tottenham announced the signing of Czech under-21 international goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague for approximately £12.5 million. Kinsky, who has made 29 appearances this season, will fill the void left by Vicario, who is expected to be out until late February due to an ankle fracture.
Kinsky completed a medical at Tottenham and signed a contract until 2031. He described the move as a “dream come true,” acknowledging the significance of the opportunity.
The loss to Newcastle marked Tottenham's fifth defeat in their last seven league matches, increasing scrutiny on Postecoglou's leadership. The club has not won a major trophy since 2008 and remains in contention for the English Cup, with a semi-final match against Liverpool scheduled for Thursday.
Postecoglou has previously acknowledged the need for results, stating that if the team were to be positioned 10th by Christmas, it would not be acceptable and would likely lead to increased scrutiny on his role. Following the defeat to Newcastle, Tottenham sits in 12th place in the league.
