Mohamed Salah has expressed his desire to achieve "something special" during what he believes will be his final year with Liverpool. The 32-year-old forward's contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
Salah has been instrumental in Liverpool's success, helping the team secure a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League. He has recorded 17 goals and 13 assists in 18 league games this season, ahead of a match against struggling Manchester United on Sunday.
While reports suggest that Salah is close to reaching an agreement with the club, he stated that a deal remains "far away" following last weekend's 5-0 victory over West Ham.
Having been part of the squad that ended Liverpool's 30-year wait for a league title in 2020, Salah reflected on the muted celebrations due to the pandemic. "To win it and it was the pandemic at that time, we didn’t really have time to celebrate it in the right way," he said. He hopes that this season will bring a more fitting celebration.
Salah is not the only key player facing contract uncertainty, as captain Virgil van Dijk and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold are also in the same situation, allowing them to negotiate with foreign clubs for the next season.
These players have played a vital role in restoring Liverpool's status in both English and European football. Under former manager Jurgen Klopp, the team secured multiple trophies, including the Champions League and the FA Cup. However, Salah believes that winning another Premier League title is essential for their legacy.
"My motivation this year was to win a trophy and be a big part of winning that trophy, especially the Premier League," he stated. He emphasized the need for the core group of players to win another trophy before their tenure at the club concludes.
