FSV Mainz 05 sporting director Niko Bungert has stated that the club has no intentions of releasing captain Silvan Widmer, despite the player being underutilized this season.
Silvan Widmer, a Swiss international, has struggled to secure a spot in the starting lineup under head coach Bo Henriksen, leading to speculation regarding his future with the team. Bungert emphasized that Widmer is not considered "dead-weight" and is still an important part of the squad.
Recently, Mainz parted ways with striker Karim Onisiwo, who moved to Salzburg. Bungert noted that, unlike Onisiwo, Widmer has not indicated a desire to leave the club, even though he has only played 176 minutes in twelve league appearances this year.
"He's doing a fantastic job of fulfilling his role as captain despite everything," Bungert stated, highlighting Widmer's positive attitude and leadership qualities. "He's a role model even though he's not on the pitch every week," he added.
Bungert referred to Widmer as a "luxury" for the team, expressing confidence that the captain will continue to strive for a place in the starting eleven.
