Three German internationals and one heavily capped German youth international celebrated their first Champions League goals on Wednesday night, contributing to VfB Stuttgart's efforts to keep their European aspirations alive.
Stuttgart achieved a significant victory against Young Boys Bern at the MHP Arena, winning 5-1. This win allowed the team to recover from a previous 1-5 defeat in Belgrade and maintain their position within reach of the UCL playoffs, with two group stage matches remaining.
Fabian Rieder provided three assists during the match, while German internationals Angelo Stiller, Josha Vagnoman, and Chris Führich scored their first goals in the Champions League. Yannik Keitel also made a notable impact off the bench, helping Stuttgart secure their first home UCL win in 15 years.
In a show of solidarity, both teams wore black armbands for Bern's Meschak Elia, whose son passed away the day before. Following a moment of silence, Young Boys Bern took an unexpected lead just five minutes into the match, with Lukasz Lakomy scoring from a distance after a one-two with Alan Virginius.
After the initial setback, Stuttgart responded with determination. Stiller equalized in the 25th minute, scoring after a well-timed pass from Vagnoman. This goal shifted the momentum in Stuttgart's favor, allowing them to play with greater confidence.
The hosts began the second half aggressively, and a controversial play in the 53rd minute led to Stuttgart taking the lead. A VAR review confirmed that the ball had not crossed the byline, allowing Millot to score the second goal for Stuttgart.
Führich extended the lead to 3-1 in the 61st minute with a remarkable long-range shot, followed by Vagnoman scoring the fourth goal in the 66th minute. Keitel capped off the scoring with a well-placed shot from outside the box, bringing the final score to 5-1.
