Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany announced that goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is likely to miss the remainder of the year due to a broken rib.
During a press conference ahead of the Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk, Kompany stated, “He has broken a rib. He probably won't play again this year. The important thing is that he now heals. Then hopefully we'll have Manu back in January.”
Neuer sustained the injury during Bayern's 0-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal last week and was unable to participate in the subsequent match, a 4-2 victory over Heidenheim.
Daniel Peretz, who replaced Neuer against Bayer Leverkusen and started in the match against Heidenheim, will continue as the starting goalkeeper. Kompany emphasized the importance of allowing Peretz to play his own game, stating, “I’d never ask a player to be a copy of another. He needs to play his game and has earned his minutes.”
While acknowledging the desire to have Neuer fit, Kompany expressed confidence in Peretz’s capabilities, noting, “But we’ve not got any change to our game with Peretz. He’s earned it.”
