Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has raised concerns regarding the “choices” of those around forward Marcus Rashford, indicating that Rashford’s future at the club may be uncertain.
The 27-year-old England international missed a third consecutive match on Sunday as United suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth. Rashford was also absent from the squad during a derby win against Manchester City earlier this month and in the League Cup quarter-final loss to Tottenham.
Prior to the defeat to Spurs, Rashford expressed in an interview that he was “ready for a new challenge and the next steps” in his career, which began at the United academy. Amorim commented on the situation, stating, “It is a hard situation but I understand that this kind of player have a lot of people around them, and making some choices that sometimes is not the first idea from the player.”
Amorim mentioned that he would focus on Rashford's performance and training, while leaving the resolution of off-field matters to the club. He underscored his desire for Rashford to remain at United, emphasizing the need for improvement from the talented player.
Despite Rashford being United's joint top-scorer in the Premier League this season, there are rising concerns about his work rate off the ball. Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock suggested that the issues surrounding Rashford may be deeper than performance alone, indicating that he is being “made a scapegoat” for broader challenges at the club.
Warnock noted ongoing cost-cutting measures at United and hinted at a possible strategy to reduce player wages, which could be impacting Rashford's situation. He characterized Rashford's experience as reminiscent of players who have faced difficulties in similar circumstances.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville expressed dismay over the potential rift between the club and Rashford, reflecting on his own experiences as an academy graduate and the importance of retaining homegrown talent. He suggested that it may be in the best interests of both parties for the situation to be resolved quickly.
United’s recent loss to Bournemouth leaves them in 13th place in the Premier League, marking their lowest position at Christmas since 1986. The team is scheduled to face Wolves on Boxing Day before hosting Newcastle the following Monday.
