Bayer Leverkusen secured their advancement to the next round of the DFB-Pokal with a decisive 3-0 victory over Elversberg. Despite the favorable outcome, managing director for sport Simon Rolfes expressed concerns regarding the team's performance in the second half.
After leading 3-0 at halftime, Leverkusen appeared to ease their intensity in the latter half, which Rolfes found unsatisfactory. He stated, "We did very well in the first half, playing with a lot of forward movement and taking an early lead. But in the second half we could have had more ball control and dominance," in remarks made to Sky Germany.
Rolfes emphasized the importance of maintaining control and possession, indicating that it would have benefited the team's performance. He added, "It's often the case that it's easier for you when you have more control of the game and possession. We don't want to hand the ball over to our opponents so much."
Despite the issues noted, Rolfes did not use the team's busy schedule as a justification for the second-half performance, asserting, "We have a squad that can play every three days."
In conclusion, Rolfes acknowledged the overall positive result, stating, “We could have controlled the game a bit more in the second half, but in the end we are through to the next round. Everything is fine.”
