Manchester United Approaches Decision on New Coach as Soap Opera Draws to a Close

Ruben Amorim has indicated that he will clarify his future after Sporting Lisbon's match on Friday amid growing speculation that he is poised to become Manchester United's new manager.

This follows United's decision to sack Erik ten Hag after a 2-1 defeat to West Ham, leaving the club in 14th place in the Premier League with only three wins from nine matches this season.

Amorim has quickly emerged as United's primary target, with Sporting Lisbon confirming that the club is willing to meet his release clause of 10 million euros ($11 million).

Although reports suggested that the 39-year-old could be confirmed as United's new manager on Thursday, these claims were deemed premature. During a press conference, Amorim was asked about the potential move but remained tight-lipped, stating, "It is a negotiation between two clubs."

He added, "We will have clarification after the game. It will be very clear, so it’s one more day. After the game tomorrow, we will have the decision made."

Amorim reportedly has an agreement in place until 2027, with an option for an additional season. His first match in charge is expected to be a trip to Ipswich on November 24.

As of Thursday, reports indicated that United had reached an agreement with Sporting and that Amorim would remain with the Portuguese champions for their next three games, including a Champions League match against Manchester City.

Amorim has won two Portuguese titles since joining Sporting in March 2020 and is recognized as a rising star in European coaching. He was previously linked to managerial roles at Liverpool and West Ham.

United's recent struggles have come despite significant investment in the transfer market. Prior to a League Cup win against Leicester, the club had managed just one victory in their last eight games across all competitions.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, United's caretaker boss, is expected to oversee the team for the next three matches before the international break. He expressed motivation to help the club move forward, even with a new manager potentially on the horizon.

In response to questions regarding Amorim, van Nistelrooy stated, "So then obviously you don’t talk to somebody that’s not announced. That’s logical in my opinion."
