Bayer 04 Leverkusen is currently uncertain about the recovery timeline for Jeanuel Belocian, who underwent "minor surgery" recently.
The 19-year-old French youth international played as a left-back in the team's opening round Pokal fixture against Carl-Zeiss Jena, delivering a commendable performance. He also demonstrated his capabilities as a left wingback in the DFL Supercup, according to reports.
On Thursday, Bayer 04 Leverkusen confirmed that Belocian had surgery on his ankle. This procedure followed a leg operation for teammate Amine Adli, marking the second player from Leverkusen to require surgical intervention within a week.
Head coach Xabi Alonso addressed the situation during a pre-match press conference, stating that the duration of Belocian's absence remains unclear. It is anticipated that he will miss at least the next three matches leading into the November international break.
Although Belocian has made only three starts and six appearances this season, he was expected to have opportunities to contribute in upcoming games, especially after impressing in Alejandro Grimaldo's regular position during the DFL Supercup.
“We have to wait for the reaction of the surgery and then we will see how quickly he recovers," Alonso said. "We decided that this would be the right time for a surgical intervention.”
