Freiburg secured a 3-0 victory over Celta Vigo in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final, taking control early and maintaining dominance at home. Vincenzo Grifo opened the scoring in the tenth minute, marking his tenth Europa League goal with a strike from outside the box.
A second Freiburg goal followed around the hour mark as Jan-Niklas Beste converted a simple tap-in after a composed build-up by Philipp Treu and Igor Matanović on the right. Johan Manzambi hit the post before halftime, and Freiburg continued their rhythm against a visiting side that struggled to mount a response.
In the second half, Claudio Giráldez made attacking substitutions for Celta Vigo, but Freiburg maintained control and extended the lead with a header from Matthias Ginter off Beste’s corner, approximately 15 minutes from full time. Substitute Lucas Höler nearly added a fourth, while Celta Vigo finished without a single shot on target.
The result leaves Freiburg with a comfortable lead ahead of the return leg at Estadio de BalaÃdos. In domestic play, Freiburg will travel to Mainz for their closing fixture of matchday 29, while Celta Vigo hosts Real Oviedo in La Liga, the bottom club in the division.
