Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has defended Nick Woltemade amid criticism of the striker's performances for Newcastle United, including his limited playing time recently. He has still been included in Germany's squad for friendlies against Switzerland and Ghana.
Nagelsmann noted that Woltemade has often played deep and faces long distances to goal when required to defend as a No. 6, arguing he is not a counter-attacking forward and would not be deployed 80 metres from goal in his national team plans.
The coach emphasized his belief in Woltemade's value to the team both on and off the pitch, describing him as a pleasant person with a strong presence and an unorthodox style of play, capable of starting or coming on as a substitute.
