Werder Bremen goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, born to a German father and Japanese mother, faces a difficult decision about whether to represent Germany or Japan at the senior international level.
Backhaus has represented Japan at the U15 level and Germany at all youth levels, and is currently a German U21 international, with the senior-choice still uncertain.
He expressed that he feels he can only make the wrong decision and anticipates likely regret whichever country he selects, noting that choosing against Germany for Japan could affect the supporters and those who have cared for him over the years.
For now, he is postponing the decision and remains focused on the U21s, saying he is not in a rush regarding the senior national team.
