Gianluigi Buffon has offered advice to Manuel Neuer on the timing of retirement as Neuer marks his 40th birthday. The veteran goalkeeper emphasized the importance of not rushing the decision and urged Neuer to listen to himself to determine the right moment to retire.
With Neuer’s Bayern Munich contract expiring at the end of the season, Buffon reflected on their shared experiences and career longevity, noting that Neuer has the option to continue or retire based on his own feelings and timing.
Buffon, who himself played at the top level into his 40s, suggested that Neuer could extend his career for several more years if he wishes, but ultimately advised that retirement should come when Neuer feels it is right rather than by pressure to decide quickly.
The interview also revisited Buffon’s first impression of Neuer around 2011 when Neuer was with Schalke 04, highlighting Neuer’s physical presence, energy, and confidence as indicators of his potential. Buffon recalled watching Neuer play in a match at San Siro and being impressed by his approach to playing outside the penalty area and his determination.
Neuer has made 590 appearances for Bayern, 203 for Schalke 04, and represented Germany 124 times at the international level. His accolades include multiple Bundesliga titles, two Champions League trophies, and the 2014 World Cup.
