EPL Controversy: Denied Penalty and Late Red Card Spark Debate as United Squanders Lead – Twice

Manchester United’s pursuit of a Champions League return hit a snag as they twice let a lead slip to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth.

Michael Carrick criticized the inconsistency of penalty decisions after the result, calling it “crazy.”

United opened the scoring from the spot through Bruno Fernandes, but Amad Diallo was denied a second penalty when Adrien Truffert challenged him inside the box.

Bournemouth equalised through Ryan Christie after Truffert assisted, and James Hill’s own goal briefly restored United’s lead before Harry Maguire was sent off and conceded a penalty for bringing down Evanilson.

VAR did not intervene to review these calls, leaving referee Stuart Attwell to make the final decisions, which Carrick said were inconsistent with the penalty awarded to United earlier.

“To give one and not give the other, I just can’t get my head around - it’s crazy,” Carrick said. “I can understand that decision (to send off Maguire) but we should have had another penalty and the game would have been different.”

Despite the setback, United remain well-placed for a top-five finish and a return to Europe’s premier competition, leading sixth-placed Chelsea by seven points.

They are not in action for more than three weeks due to an international break followed by the FA Cup quarter-finals, with Carrick stating the team will come back stronger after the break.
