Borussia Dortmund announced the immediate departure of sporting director Sebastian Kehl, a decision reached unanimously between Kehl and the club’s leadership after discussions on Sunday. The announcement followed a 3-2 win over Hamburger SV the day before.
Kehl has held multiple roles at the club, returning in 2018 as head of the professional players department, contributing to the 2021 DFB-Pokal triumph, and being appointed sporting director in 2022, a period that included Dortmund’s run to the UEFA Champions League Final in 2024.
Sporting director Lars Ricken stated that the summer was identified as the appropriate time for changes and that the contract termination was agreed upon to allow both sides to prepare. He highlighted Kehl’s long association with the club and expressed gratitude for his contributions.
Kehl issued a statement reflecting on his near 24-year association with the club, expressing pride in his time with Dortmund and wishing the club continued success, while noting the decision to move forward for both parties.
It remains unclear whether a successor has been identified or when a replacement might be announced.
