Werder Bremen Captain Speechless: Team Lacks Self-Confidence Currently

Werder Bremen captain Marco Friedl spoke after his team’s defeat to St. Pauli, describing the performance as frustrating and difficult to process. The result extended a winless run to 13 matches and left Bremen in the bottom two of the table.

The match saw goalkeeper Mio Backhaus make a costly error for St. Pauli’s opening goal, as Hauke Wahl’s header slipped through his hands. Friedl said the team controlled much of the first half but conceded a goal that was unlikely in most cases, expressing disappointment with how the game ended and defending his keeper against criticism.

Head coach Daniel Thioune also defended Backhaus, stressing that there would be no scapegoating and highlighting the goalkeeper’s overall season and potential. He attributed the defeat to a lack of finishing from Bremen rather than solely to the concession of the goal, stating that the team did not receive the rewards their efforts deserved.

Friedl acknowledged a drop in self-confidence within the squad, citing difficulties in scoring and a tendency to leak goals from avoidable situations. The club faces a crucial upcoming match against Heidenheim at home, a fixture described as potentially season-defining given the current form and standings.
