Tottenham has appointed Igor Tudor as interim manager until the end of the season, amid a perilous Premier League position that threatens a relegation battle. The club sits 16th after Thomas Frank was dismissed last week, following a run that prompted the changes. Tudor faces a difficult assignment starting with a home match against league leaders Arsenal in the north London derby.
Tudor acknowledged the challenges and stressed there is no time for excuses, indicating that he and his staff must act quickly to improve results. He emphasized the need to find the best system given a lengthy injury list that affected the previous manager’s tenure and to demand extra effort from the squad.
The new interim manager also faces off-field issues, including tensions with fans and sponsors. Reports suggest a potential financial impact regardless of relegation, with sponsors considering their deals and bonuses tied to European competition, which would be jeopardized if the club does not qualify for the Champions League. A sponsorship expert warned that missing European competition could incur tens of millions in penalties, with relegation potentially compounding the losses.
There have been disputes over fans’ concerns, with the supporters’ trust alleging that minutes of a recent meeting edited out lines acknowledging their input, fueling further dissatisfaction. Tottenham holds a five-point cushion over relegation-threatened West Ham, who have gained ground under their new management, while Spurs have won only two of their last 17 league matches.
As Tudor takes charge, several players are unavailable due to injury or suspension, including captain Cristian Romero (suspended) and others such as James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus, Richarlison, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Lucas Bergvall.
