2. Bundesliga Preview: Fortuna Düsseldorf versus VfL Bochum

Uwe Rösler is set to return to his former club Fortuna Düsseldorf as his Bochum side seeks an eleventh consecutive unbeaten run in their 2. Bundesliga clash on Friday night. Düsseldorf will host an in-form Bochum who have not lost in ten matches, while Düsseldorf’s season-best streak ended in Darmstadt last week.

In Darmstadt, Düsseldorf produced one of their best performances of the season, but were denied by Marcel Schuhen’s heroics in goal before Matej Maglica bundled home a late winner from a set-piece.

Bochum, who drew 1-1 with Nürnberg, extended their unbeaten run to ten games but have only won three times in that span, keeping them in tenth place as they fail to convert draws into wins. Since Rösler took charge in mid-October, Bochum have improved significantly, suffering only one defeat in 15 matches after an eight-match winless start under Dieter Hecking.

Rösler’s return to Düsseldorf marks a reunion with the club where he previously coached, including the 2020 relegation from the Bundesliga and a subsequent 2. Bundesliga stint in which they narrowly missed a relegation/promotion playoff. This will be his first visit back to the Merkur Spiel-Arena since leaving at the end of the 2020/21 season. Interim Düsseldorf coach David Siebers led the teams in the reverse fixture, where Düsseldorf won at Vonovia Ruhrstadion thanks to an early Tim Oberdorf strike.

Thioune has since moved to Werder Bremen, while Markus Anfang has rebuilt Bochum and collected 15 points from his first 15 games back in the second tier.
