SC Freiburg advanced to the Europa League Round of 16 after a defeat in Lille, and will face one of Dinamo Zagreb, Brann, Genk, or Bologna when the campaign resumes in March.
“It's a great success for us. That's what we need to focus on,” said the Freiburg coach, who also dismissed negative headlines about losing home advantage ahead of the second leg, stating, “I don't want to read anywhere that we've lost our home advantage or anything like that. That’s nonsense.” At halftime, Freiburg were in second place, which would have secured a home game in all second-leg ties.
In the second half, Maximilian Eggestein received a straight red card, and Lille secured an injury-time winner from a penalty to drop Freiburg to seventh place. The coach added that he had no complaints about the two key refereeing decisions.
