Liverpool Icon Jamie Carragher Asserts Arne Slot Has One Week to Preserve His Position

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has stated that under-pressure coach Arne Slot has “a week to save his job” following the defending Premier League champion’s recent defeat. Liverpool lost 4-1 at Anfield to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, marking their ninth defeat in 12 matches across all competitions.

The result resulted in a significant number of frustrated fans leaving the stadium during the match, reflecting the team's poor performance, which is the worst run for the club in over 70 years.

In a column for The Telegraph UK, Carragher emphasized that Liverpool must secure “at least seven points” from their next three fixtures against West Ham, Sunderland, and Leeds United, or face an untenable situation. He noted, “No matter how much goodwill the manager has, Liverpool Football Club cannot sustain the drop in standards witnessed over the past three months.”

Slot, who previously led Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season, stated he remains determined to fight for his position and believes his conversations with the club's owners have remained consistent. In a press conference, he acknowledged the team's drop in standards but expressed confidence in the players.

Slot also shared insights regarding the team's struggles to capitalize on scoring opportunities while making critical mistakes that have been punished. He noted, “We get knock after knock after knock, which is hard,” stressing the importance of perseverance.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard weighed in on the situation, warning that each defeat brings the team closer to a crisis and expressing disappointment with the performance against PSV. He affirmed that the current struggles cannot be excused at a club of Liverpool's stature.

Slot remains hopeful for a positive outcome in the upcoming match against West Ham, with the potential return of goalkeeper Alisson Becker and midfielder Florian Wirtz expected to bolster the squad.
