Evaluation of Werder Bremen's Performance

The 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign is progressing rapidly, with the 10th matchweek now complete. Following the conclusion of another international break, it is an opportune moment to evaluate the season thus far for Werder Bremen.

Currently positioned in 8th place, Werder Bremen has not lost a match in the past six weeks and has secured victories in their last three home games, contributing to a positive atmosphere among supporters at the Weserstadion.

However, there is a growing concern regarding the team's performance, despite the favorable results. While they are securing points, their overall play has been subpar, particularly in attack. The defense is performing adequately, but the offensive strategy has appeared disjointed at times.

With the arrival of new manager Horst Steffen in the summer, a transition in style and tactics was anticipated. Although some adjustment time is expected, the team has shown alarming inconsistencies, often struggling to connect passes and maintain shape during matches.

Despite these struggles, there have been moments of brilliance, particularly evident during a dominant away win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. However, recent performances have leaned more towards survival rather than showcasing a strong style of play. The future will depend on the team's ability to improve its performance while continuing to secure results.

On the defensive side, Werder Bremen has encountered a selection dilemma. They boast three starting-quality center backs—Marco Friedl, Amos Pieper, and Karim Coulibaly—with only two available spots in the lineup. Friedl, the club captain, has been a reliable presence in the defense, while Pieper has regained form, and Coulibaly has emerged as a promising talent.

The current tactical setup requires a back four, leaving the manager with a decision to make regarding who will remain in the lineup. Friedl has temporarily filled in at left-back due to injuries but has faced challenges in that position. His return to center-back will necessitate another player stepping aside, creating a difficult choice for the manager.

Coulibaly may be the player expected to sit out, but doing so could hamper his development. Conversely, if Pieper were benched after strong performances, it could negatively impact team morale. Furthermore, Pieper's contract situation adds another layer of complexity, as retaining him may depend on his playing time.

Steffen faces considerable pressure as the team heads into a challenging final stretch before the winter break. They will face RB Leipzig, led by former Bremen manager Ole Werner, followed by matches against newly-promoted FC Köln and fierce rivals Hamburg. The concluding matches before the Hinrunde include games against VfB Stuttgart and Augsburg, both of which present unique challenges.

The outcomes of these upcoming fixtures will provide crucial insights into Werder Bremen's prospects for the remainder of the season. If they can maintain a position near the top of the table, they may emerge as contenders for European competition. Conversely, a decline in form could signal a developmental year rather than one of contention.

Fortunately for the team and its supporters, there will be no further international breaks in the immediate future.
