Succession Plans for Head of Sport Position at Gladbach Following Roland Virkus's Departure

Borussia Mönchengladbach is actively seeking a successor for the recently dismissed sporting CEO, Roland Virkus.

Following the termination of Virkus, the club has shifted its focus to potential candidates for the position. Initially, Nils-Ole Book from Elversberg was considered, but after he extended his contract with the 2. Bundesliga club, the search has turned to other individuals.

Reports indicate that Jörg Schmadtke and Jan Schlaudraff are being evaluated as potential co-leads. Both candidates are currently unattached, with Schmadtke having stepped down as Liverpool’s sporting director in February 2024, and Schlaudraff leaving his position as managing director for sport at SKN St. Pölten in May 2024.

Another candidate mentioned is Lutz Pfannenstiel, who was released from his duties as sporting director of MLS team St. Louis City in August after a five-year tenure. Borussia Mönchengladbach is reportedly in discussions with the 52-year-old.

Additionally, former club captain Martin Stranzl, who is currently pursuing a diploma in football management, has been linked with the position. Other names under consideration include Jonas Boldt and Marinko Jurendic. Marcell Jansen is also on the club’s radar for a potential future role on the board.

Club CEO Dr. Sascha Stegemann emphasized the need for a sporting leader, stating, “Whether that’s a sporting CEO or a sporting director depends on the profile we find and who is interested in taking on this role at Borussia.” He highlighted the importance of having someone who can plan the sporting structures for the coming years and withstand the pressures of working at a traditional club.

Stegemann further noted that the ideal candidate should be someone who continuously thinks about sporting developments and innovations and is ready to embrace the challenge of shaping the club's future.
