Chelsea missed the opportunity to ascend to the top of the Premier League as Fabio Carvalho’s 93rd-minute equaliser secured a 2-2 draw for Brentford in Saturday’s west London derby.
The world champions faced challenges due to Enzo Maresca’s experimental team selection, which allowed Kevin Schade to give Brentford a first-half lead.
Substitute Cole Palmer sparked a Chelsea revival following his return from injury, equalising before Moises Caicedo’s powerful strike appeared to clinch all three points for the Blues.
However, Brentford capitalised on their persistent threat from long throw-ins, with Carvalho finding space to score from close range in the dying moments of the match.
Despite remaining unbeaten this season, Chelsea sits fifth in the standings, just one point behind leaders Arsenal, Tottenham, Bournemouth, and Liverpool.
Maresca reflected on the match, noting that the team struggled in the first half to find solutions against Brentford’s solid defense, but performed better in the second half. He expressed disappointment over conceding in the 93rd minute and acknowledged the need to manage transitions and set pieces more effectively.
Brentford recently lost Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo, who contributed a combined 39 Premier League goals last season, placing pressure on Schade to fill the gap. Schade scored his first goal of the season in the 35th minute, capitalising on a through ball from Jordan Henderson.
Maresca made immediate changes at halftime, substituting Marc Cucurella, Reece James, and Tyrique George for Jorrel Hato, Wesley Fofana, and Facundo Buonanotte. George forced a save from Brentford’s goalkeeper, but the game shifted with Palmer’s introduction in the 56th minute.
Palmer quickly made an impact, scoring five minutes after his entry, marking his first non-penalty Premier League goal since January. Schade nearly regained the lead for Brentford shortly after, but Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez made a crucial save.
Palmer had a chance to extend his tally but shot too close to the goalkeeper after a fast break. Chelsea eventually took the lead through Caicedo, whose shot from the edge of the box found the top corner.
However, Chelsea's Alejandro Garnacho was caught off guard in stoppage time, allowing Carvalho to score from Kristoffer Ajer’s flick-on.
Brentford’s new manager, Keith Andrews, emphasized the importance of long throws, countering perceptions of “snobbery” in the game regarding such tactics.
The draw moved Brentford up to 12th place with four points from their first four matches.
In other Premier League action, Bournemouth climbed to third place after Antoine Semenyo’s penalty secured a 2-1 victory over Brighton, while Aston Villa held Everton to a 0-0 draw. Leeds suffered a late defeat to Fulham due to an own goal, and Sunderland maintained their strong start with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace. Arsenal defeated Nottingham Forest 3-0, marking a challenging debut for manager Ange Postecoglou.
