Gabriel Martinelli's 93rd-minute equaliser salvaged a crucial point for Arsenal in their Premier League match against Manchester City, preventing a damaging defeat. Meanwhile, Aston Villa's struggles continued as they settled for a 1-1 draw against 10-man Sunderland.
Arsenal appeared set for a second loss in five Premier League games after Erling Haaland's early goal for City. Martinelli, who came off the bench, managed to score his second goal in a week, ensuring the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Both teams now find themselves trailing behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, with Arsenal in second place, five points adrift, and City in ninth, eight points off the top.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed disappointment over the missed opportunity to win, stating, "I think we played better than last year when we beat them (5-1)." The Gunners had not conceded from open play in their first five matches of the season but were breached early on by Haaland’s counter-attack goal.
Haaland initiated the play from deep in his half, linking up with Tijjani Reijnders before receiving a pass and scoring. He now boasts 13 goals for club and country in just eight games this season. In contrast, Manchester City benefitted from the early impact of their new goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, who blocked Arsenal's best chance in the first half.
In the second half, Arteta introduced Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze to enhance the attack. Despite some attempts from Eze, Arsenal struggled to penetrate City’s defensive setup, leading to Guardiola reinforcing his back line by substituting both Haaland and Phil Foden. However, Martinelli found the net after receiving a pass from Eze, executing a skillful finish over Donnarumma.
Aston Villa's recent decline under manager Unai Emery has left them in the relegation zone with just three points from their first five games. They faced a promising opportunity against Sunderland after their opponent's defender, Reinildo Mandava, was sent off for a foul. Villa finally scored after a long wait when Matty Cash's long-range effort deceived Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs.
However, their lead was short-lived as Wilson Isidor equalized shortly after, capitalizing on a defensive lapse. Emery noted, "It should have been easier to take advantage (against 10 men) but we were not playing with our identity." Meanwhile, Sunderland's strong start to the season has seen them sit in seventh place after only one loss in their opening five matches.
Newcastle United also faced challenges, struggling for goals following the departure of Alexander Isak. Their recent matches have seen them draw three away games 0-0, and they were content with securing a point against Bournemouth after a quick turnaround from their Champions League defeat to Barcelona.
