Bayern Munich's head coach Vincent Kompany expressed pride following his team's 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League on matchday 1. This performance has solidified Bayern's status as a title contender.
Kompany highlighted several key elements from the match, including the impressive play of Michael Olise, a record-breaking performance from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, and a new approach to pressing the opponent.
“Our performance was very good; the game was quite intensive and it was a lot of fun to watch. The boys have shown a lot of joy on the pitch,” Kompany stated.
He noted that Chelsea was not the team's first significant test this season, mentioning previous matches against Tottenham, Stuttgart, and Leipzig as strong challenges. “Chelsea are of course a great team, they've won the Club World Cup a few months back and were in good form before this match, but we were concentrated and played well,” he added.
Regarding the team's pressing strategy, Kompany remarked, “Our pressing was the key to the win tonight. Of course, you have to watch out not to lose too many battles when pressing so high, but we did that well. We are not playing like this in order to regain the ball - we're doing that in order to score goals right after.”
Kompany praised Olise's potential, stating, “Michael Olise is turning into a superstar. You can coach and help many players in training, but Michael just has that special talent. He is a joy to watch.” He emphasized the importance of sustained performance over time for top players.
He also commended Neuer for his leadership and work ethic, saying, “Manuel Neuer is a great example for all of us. He is very humble and shows all the boys, old and young, that you have to work hard to reach your goals - in training and in the games.”
