Cameron winger Bryan Mbeumo has joined Manchester United from Brentford on a contract until 2030, with an option for an additional year. Mbeumo, 25, is reported to have cost the club an initial £65 million (AU$134 million) after a successful season in which he scored 20 goals in 38 league appearances.
Prior to United's successful bid, Tottenham, managed by former Brentford coach Thomas Frank, was also pursuing the France-born attacker. United's third offer was accepted last week, leading to the transfer.
In a statement, Mbeumo expressed his excitement about joining Manchester United, stating, “As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams. The team whose shirt I wore growing up.” He emphasized the club's stature, mentioning its incredible stadium and passionate fans, and expressed a strong desire to compete for major trophies.
United's coach, Ruben Amorim, has also signed two other players this summer to improve upon last season's disappointing performance, which included a loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final and a 15th-place finish in the Premier League, the club's lowest since the 1973-74 season. The new signings include Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and teenage Paraguayan defender Diego Leon.
Mbeumo, who previously played for Brentford for six years, scored 70 goals and provided 51 assists in 242 appearances after joining from French club Troyes in 2019. He played a key role in helping Brentford gain promotion to the Premier League in 2021 and contributed to their impressive 10th-place finish in the 2024-25 season.
Jason Wilcox, the director of football at Manchester United, expressed satisfaction with securing Mbeumo as one of their primary targets ahead of the pre-season tour. He noted that the upcoming experience in the United States would be an excellent opportunity for Mbeumo to work with Amorim and his new teammates as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Manchester United will begin their pre-season tour in the United States on Sunday, facing West Ham, before starting the new Premier League season against Arsenal on August 17.
