Ange Postecoglou led Tottenham Hotspur in a celebratory open-top bus parade through north London on Friday, following the team's victory in the Europa League, which ended a 17-year trophy drought. Approximately 150,000 fans gathered to salute the players, with Postecoglou delivering an inspiring speech that highlighted the contributions of the team.
Postecoglou expressed gratitude towards the players and staff, calling them "absolute heroes" and acknowledging their efforts in bringing the trophy home. He concluded his speech with a memorable remark, stating, "All the best television series, season three is better than season two,” hinting at future ambitions for the club.
Tottenham secured their first European silverware in 41 years by defeating Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao, with Brennan Johnson scoring the decisive goal. This victory came despite the team's struggles in the Premier League, where they currently sit 17th, just above the relegation zone.
The parade featured a double-decker bus adorned with "Europa League winners," allowing players to celebrate with fans. Son Heung-min, the team's captain, proudly displayed the trophy, while teammates showcased their winners' medals. The event was marked by enthusiastic chants from supporters as the bus made its way through the streets.
Postecoglou's side faced a challenging season, but players expressed a desire to build on this success. Micky van de Ven remarked on the emotional significance of the parade and the trophy, emphasizing the team's spirit and commitment to achieving further success in the coming season.
Former player Graham Roberts, who was part of the 1984 UEFA Cup-winning team, expressed optimism for the future, stating that the victory would instill belief in the squad and help them pursue additional silverware.
With this triumph, Tottenham's trophy parade marked the first since their FA Cup win in 1991, while their last major silverware prior to this was the League Cup in 2008.
