Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has addressed speculation linking coach Xabi Alonso to a potential return to Real Madrid, indicating that Alonso could leave due to a "gentleman's agreement" if he chooses to do so.
Amid rising rumors that Alonso might replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid after the current season, Carro confirmed that Leverkusen would be open to allowing him to depart for Real Madrid or any of his previous clubs, provided the conditions are met.
Although Alonso has one year remaining on his contract, reports suggest that Leverkusen would seek a transfer fee between €15 million and €20 million for their coach.
"In a few weeks, we'll know if there's a coaching change at our clubs, but the fact is that we're a very professional club and we have to be prepared for anything," Carro stated. He highlighted the foresight in signing Alonso until 2026, expressing confidence in his abilities as a coach.
Carro expressed a preference for Alonso to stay with Leverkusen and emphasized the importance of making a clear decision regarding the coach's future promptly. He acknowledged that while they are preparing for the next season with Alonso, they must also be ready for any changes that may arise.
"We're not naive, but the truth is that the coach is important, and that's why we're preparing next season's team with him," Carro remarked, noting the necessity of discussions if another club shows interest in Alonso.
He concluded by stating that a decision on Alonso's future must be made within the next three to four weeks, indicating that waiting until the end of the season is not feasible.
