Leeds United and Burnley secured promotion to the Premier League on Monday, while Sheffield United will compete in the Championship play-offs after a disappointing season finale.
Leeds, returning to the top division after the 2022/23 season, achieved a commanding 6-0 victory over Stoke City at Elland Road, with Joel Piroe scoring four goals. The team needed Sheffield United to lose against Burnley in the later match to confirm their promotion.
Burnley, managed by Scott Parker, also clinched promotion with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United, thanks to two goals from captain Josh Brownhill. Both Leeds and Burnley finished the season with 94 points, while Sheffield United ended with 86 points, having won only one of their last five matches.
Leeds, who faced disappointment in the previous season's Championship play-off final, dominated the match against Stoke. Piroe, who had not scored since February, netted a hat-trick by the 20th minute, followed by goals from Junior Firpo and another from Piroe before halftime. Wilfried Gnonto added a sixth goal in the second half.
Manager Daniel Farke expressed pride in his team's performance, highlighting their ability to handle pressure. He noted Piroe's return to form and compared his scoring resurgence to "shaking a bottle of ketchup."
Despite a shaky start to March, Leeds rebounded to win their last four league games, finishing as the league's top scorers with 89 goals. In contrast, Burnley, known for their strong defense, conceded only 15 goals throughout the season.
In their match, Brownhill opened the scoring for Burnley, but Sheffield United equalized shortly after. Brownhill then scored again from the penalty spot, securing the win and extending Burnley's unbeaten streak to a club-record 31 games.
Brownhill expressed his emotions following the victory, emphasizing the collective effort of the team in achieving promotion. Sheffield United, while guaranteed to finish third, will now face a challenging path to secure a Premier League spot through the play-offs.
