Ipswich Town faced relegation from the Premier League following a 3-0 defeat against Newcastle United, while Chelsea maintained their pursuit of a top five finish with a narrow 1-0 victory over Everton on Saturday.
In a match that highlighted the difficulties Ipswich experienced this season, Kieran McKenna’s team had Ben Johnson sent off in the 37th minute due to two yellow cards received in quick succession at St James’ Park.
Newcastle's Alexander Isak successfully converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Jacob Murphy by Julio Enciso during first-half stoppage time.
Dan Burn extended Newcastle's lead with a header in the 56th minute, and William Osula's goal in the 80th minute sealed Ipswich's fate, leaving them unable to avoid relegation.
Currently sitting third from the bottom, Ipswich is 15 points adrift of West Ham, ensuring their return to the Championship after just one season in the top flight, having secured promotion after 22 years.
Ipswich’s performance this season has been underwhelming, winning only four of their 34 league matches. Their relegation, alongside Southampton and Leicester, means all three teams promoted last season will drop back to the second tier.
McKenna, who was praised for his attacking strategy during the club's rise through the leagues, expressed disappointment at the team's inability to retain their Premier League status, stating, “We’ve been through it the last few weeks, we knew it was pretty likely. At the end we have fallen short but it’s not for lack of effort.”
Meanwhile, Newcastle's victory propelled them to third place, as they aim for Champions League qualification. Chelsea's Enzo Maresca praised his team's "nasty" performance following their crucial win, with Nicolas Jackson scoring the decisive goal in the first half.
Maresca noted the team's control in the first half but acknowledged a slight drop in performance after the break, stating, “We were strong, nasty enough when we needed to be like that. Overall I think we deserved to win and we are happy.”
In other matches, Fulham secured a 2-1 victory against Southampton, with Ryan Sessegnon scoring in stoppage time to deny Southampton a chance to escape the record-low Premier League points total.
Brighton achieved a 3-2 win over West Ham, marking a turnaround in form, while Wolves equalized a club record with their sixth consecutive top-flight win, defeating Leicester 3-0.
