Oliver Baumann, the goalkeeper for Hoffenheim, is poised to seize another opportunity in the upcoming return leg against Italy.
Baumann's performance was crucial in Germany's comeback victory in Italy, especially following injuries to Marc-André ter Stegen and Kevin Trapp, which allowed him to step into the starting role. He expressed his appreciation for the chance to contribute, stating, "I've always accepted every role, whether it’s supporting Marc (ter Stegen) or Manu (Neuer) as number 3 or, now, as a number 1. I'm grateful to be able to help the team. There is a long way to go before the World Cup. I simply want to help the team."
Baumann emphasized his focus on the present, saying, "If I can do that, my job will be done. I don't want to look too far ahead. And, as I've said many times, I'm proud and very grateful to be able to play."
Germany's head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, reaffirmed ter Stegen’s position as the first-choice goalkeeper when fit, stating, "Marc is on the right track. If he’s fit, he’ll be our number 1. Otherwise, the battle for the number 1 spot will be open for all goalkeepers."
