England’s record goal-scorer Harry Kane has defended his season by drawing a comparison with football legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Despite being on track to finish as the Bundesliga's top scorer, Kane has faced criticism regarding his performances in significant matches, particularly until the Round of 16 Champions League tie against Bayer Leverkusen.
In a press conference ahead of England's match against Albania, Kane remarked, "It's like Ronaldo and Messi. There is criticism when they produced those crazy numbers, and then scored 40 goals the next season, instead of 50. It was like they had a bad season. People take it for granted, and maybe a little bit with England, too." He highlighted his achievement of scoring 69 international goals, noting that goals against lower-ranked teams like Albania often go unnoticed. Kane subsequently scored his 70th international goal during Thomas Tuchel’s debut as England's coach.
On the podcast “The Rest Is Football,” former England players Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer discussed the absence of weaker opponents like Albania during their careers. Kane, who is currently with Bayern Munich, is striving for his first trophy in an otherwise successful career, as Bayern leads the Bundesliga and competes in the Champions League. He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football, stating, "I know how things can quickly change in football. And, we're not getting carried away," as the team prepares to face Serie A's defending champions and league leaders, Inter.
