Julian Nagelsmann has discussed his choice to start Oliver Baumann over Alexander Nübel for Germany's upcoming match against Italy in the UEFA Nations League.
With Marc-André ter Stegen sidelined due to a long-term injury, Hoffenheim's Oliver Baumann will take the goalkeeping position. The decision follows a competitive selection process between Baumann and Nübel.
In a press conference prior to Thursday's first leg, Germany's coach Nagelsmann commented on the decision, stating, "Alex handled the decision very professionally, which I found very, very positive. In the end, it came down to the last millimetre. It wasn't very clear, but we had to make a decision."
He added, "Both are having a good season, both are at a good, consistent level. Oli is a bit more consistent at this level. We told both of them that it's for these two games because we also have a top goalkeeper in Marc and then we'll make a new decision after these games."
Baumann has previously made two appearances for the German national team.
