Eintracht Frankfurt faced AS Roma during Matchday 8 of the UEFA Europa League, concluding the match with a 2-0 victory for the hosts, marked by goals from Angeliño and Eldor Shomurodov.
This defeat represented only the second loss for Eintracht Frankfurt in the league phase of the Europa League. Despite the loss, the team secured a fifth-place finish, guaranteeing their direct qualification to the Round of 16. Coach Dino Toppmöller's squad can now await the outcomes of the preliminary ties set to take place in February.
Roma initiated the match energetically at the Stadio Olimpico, with Angeliño posing an early threat through a header and a cross that was not converted by Dovbyk. Frankfurt responded with a significant effort; Mile Svilar made a strong save from a close-range attempt by Hugo Larsson.
Gianluca Mancini came close to scoring when his shot struck the post. However, he contributed to Roma's first goal in the 44th minute, delivering a cross that Angeliño volleyed in, resulting in a deflection off Tuta that found its way past goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.
In the second half, Frankfurt attempted to gain momentum, with Hugo Eketiké nearly equalizing, but Svilar's swift recovery denied the chance. Roma reasserted their control, leading Toppmöller to make three substitutions at around the hour mark, introducing Mo Dahoud, Can Uzun, and Niels Noounkou.
Nonetheless, it was Roma's substitutions that made a notable impact. Matias Soulé and Eldor Shomurodov, who entered the pitch shortly after each other, combined effectively, with Soulé providing an assist for Shomurodov, who finished confidently into the lower left corner of the net.
With the match outcome secured, Toppmöller gave a debut to 16-year-old Ebu Bekir Is. Roma, who needed the win for advancement to the knockout stages, managed the closing minutes of the match, successfully holding off Frankfurt during the four minutes of additional time.
