Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has indicated that the club’s board is the “true responsible ones” for the lack of progress following a stretch of one win in seven games.
Romero made these remarks to Spanish broadcaster Telemundo after Tottenham's 4-3 defeat to Chelsea left the team in 11th place in the Premier League.
He noted, “Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results. Those are the things to imitate,” emphasizing the need for the board to recognize ongoing issues.
During the summer transfer window, Tottenham set a record by signing Dominic Solanke for up to £65 million, but much of their estimated £125 million spending focused on teenage talents with limited impact on the first team.
Manager Ange Postecoglou is facing a critical week, with a Europa League match against Rangers, a league game against bottom-placed Southampton, and a League Cup quarter-final against Manchester United on the horizon.
Since joining Tottenham in 2021, Romero has played under five different managers, including caretakers.
Despite having one of the best stadiums and a modern training facility, Spurs have not won a trophy since 2008. Romero stated, “The last few years, it’s always the same -- first the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it’s always the same people responsible.”
He expressed hope that the board would acknowledge their role in the club's struggles and facilitate progress, as he believes Tottenham has the potential to compete for the title annually.
