Premier League basement club Southampton has sacked manager Russell Martin following a significant 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.
The club announced the decision, stating it was a “difficult decision to part ways” with Martin after the team managed only one win in 16 games this season.
Southampton, who were promoted last season, currently sit at the bottom of the table, nine points adrift of safety.
In a statement, the club acknowledged the challenges faced at the start of the season while readjusting to life in the top flight, emphasizing the urgency for results to improve their situation.
Current Under-21s boss Simon Rusk will serve as interim manager until a permanent replacement is appointed.
During the match against Tottenham, Southampton conceded five goals in the first half. Martin expressed his disappointment, stating that the team's response to setbacks has been inadequate this season.
Reflecting on his future, the 38-year-old former Scotland international reiterated his commitment to continue working and fighting for the team.
