Pop sensation Ed Sheeran has issued an apology via social media after unintentionally interrupting a live interview with Manchester United's new head coach, Ruben Amorim.
The incident occurred during an interview on Sky Sports, following United's 1-1 draw with Ipswich, a club in which Sheeran holds a minority stake.
As Amorim was being interviewed, Sheeran mistakenly approached analyst Jamie Redknapp, who greeted the singer but quickly suggested he could “come and say hello in a minute.” Sheeran seemed unaware that the interview was taking place live, leading to the awkward interruption.
On Monday morning, Sheeran took to his Instagram story to express his regret, stating he felt “like a bit of a bell***” for the incident. He wrote, “Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday, didn’t actually realise he was being interviewed at the time, was popping to say hi and bye to Jamie. Obv feel a bit of a bell*** but life goes on. Great game though, congrats on all involved x.”
Sheeran, a dedicated Ipswich supporter, has been involved with the club as a shirt sponsor for both the men's and women's teams since 2021. In August, he acquired a 1.4 percent minority stake in the team following their promotion to the English top flight for the first time in 22 years.
Additionally, the four-time Grammy award winner has taken on a new role within Ipswich, contributing to the recruitment team. According to the club's chairman, Mark Ashton, Sheeran played a significant part in the recruitment of a player by participating in a video call with the target signing.
Ashton mentioned at a recent Soccerex event, “A local man, global superstar, sponsor of the football club, now a shareholder and now officially part of our recruitment team. In the summer we were trying to persuade one particular player to join the football club and realised very quickly that he was an Ed Sheeran fan.”
Sheeran attended Ipswich's first game of the season against Liverpool and was present when the team secured their first Premier League victory of the season in November. He has expressed his deep connection to Suffolk, where he has lived since childhood, emphasizing the sense of community he feels there.
In earlier statements, Sheeran remarked, “It’s such a joy to be a fan of Ipswich Town. There are ups and downs but football is all about taking the highs and the lows.”
